Exploring Nature Through Gel Plate Printing at Pier 11 Studio

Gel plate printmaking with natural materials

Yesterday marked an exciting milestone at Pier 11 Studio as we held our first class focused on gel plate printing, infused with a delightful nature twist. Despite the chilly weather outside, our studio was a warm and inviting space where creativity flourished.

An art class with Akua ink and gel plates, students work on their monotype prints in all the colors of the rainbow.

Our students are “imPRESSive”! :)

Participants engaged in a hands-on experience using dried pressed leaves, flowers, intricate paper cutouts, seashells, and small branches. These natural elements served as tools to create unique shapes, lines, and textures on our 8" x 10" gel plates. The process of layering these materials allowed for a rich exploration of design, as students discovered how to manipulate the textures and forms to enhance their prints.

Akua Intaglio Inks

We used Akua soy and honey-based inks, which provided vibrant colors and aligned with our commitment to environmentally friendly practices. The class delved into various techniques, including taking ghost prints and employing painting methods directly on the gel plates. This approach added a painterly effect to the final pieces, showcasing the versatility of gel plate printing.

The studio atmosphere was filled with fun and creativity, as students shared ideas and techniques, making the experience even more enjoyable. It was heartening to witness the enthusiasm and talent of our participants, who made our inaugural class a resounding success.
